It is a celebration of a young girl’s transition into womanhood. This is also known as Voni function or half saree function.
In South India Coming of age ceremony or rites of passage (Langa Voni Telugu: లంగా వోని), is celebrated when a girl reaches 9, 11 or 13 years (Odd years).
Ritushuddhi also called the Ritu Kala Samskara ceremony is a Hindu ceremony performed when a girl wears a saree for the first time. In tamil this is மஞ்சள் நீராட்டு விழா Manjal Neerattu Vizha. This ritual is very prominent in the southern states of India. It is known by many names “Langa Voni” function In Telugu states, ‘Pavadai Dhavani” function in Tamil, “Langa Davani” function in Kannada, But most know it as “Half saree” function. Named after the dress girls wear during adolescence till they marry.
